What is a Caring AI? – Session 1: Data and the Body

Writer: Caroline ClarkCaroline Clark

Updated: Feb 5

In the first session of our "What is a Caring AI?" workshop series in collaboration with the University of Bristol's Centre for Sociodigital Futures, we explored the relationship between data, AI, and the body, with a focus on ethical implications.

We began by discussing how data is collected, stored, and used by AI systems, noting that AI relies heavily on data sets for training and development. The participants reflected on the personal data they generate daily and identified data trails left by their interactions with digital platforms. For example, they discovered that platforms like Spotify collect extensive user data to personalise recommendations.

Using virtual reality headsets, the learners visualised how data could become an extension of their bodies. This immersive experience allowed them to explore the concept of the "datafied" body in 3D, considering how data may impact different individuals and communities in unique ways.

In the afternoon, Vince, a creative technologist with expertise in coding and illustration, guided the group through hands-on experiments with AI language models such as talk.ai and ChatGPT. The group discussed how these tools could offer both creative opportunities and accessibility benefits, particularly for dyslexic individuals.

They also experimented with image generation AI models like Perchance.org and Leonardo.ai. Using simple prompts such as "A cat in a hat," they generated dynamic and detailed images, which they discovered could even be converted into elaborate 3D models.

Through these activities, the participants explored both the possibilities and challenges of emerging AI technologies. They discussed ethical concerns related to data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the responsibilities of AI creators and users to ensure technology serves society in a compassionate and equitable way.

Thanks to Hattie at the Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed for this lovely write up of our workshop 🙏
