Science Creates Workshops

Come join our workshop in the Learning Lab at the Old Market Science Creates incubator, led by Ben at the Science Creates Outreach team in collaboration with one of the amazing innovative companies in residence. Take a four week deep dive into a project with us.

Sessions are for 12 years + , however if you feel your young person is ready then we do accept learners from 10 years old.

Location: Old Market Incubator  BS2 0NS

Time: 1030 - 1230

Workshops cost £12 each and need to be booked for the four week block. If making payment is difficult please email and we can support you with booking.

June Workshop* plan:

6th June  - Principles of Programming

Learners will gain an understanding of the basics of programming principles, including how computers interpret instructions, algorithms and functions. The culmination of this session is using block based code to control a 'space rover'.

13th June - Pioneering Power

Batteries are critical for our society to function, but how do they actually work and why are they so harmful to the environment? Working with member company Anaphite, learners will model how a battery functions and use multimeters to take measurements and plot a graph, drawing their own conclusions about batteries and electric vehicles.

20th June  - Newton's Laws

This workshop focuses on Newton's three laws of motion: what are they, what effects do they have and how can we apply them to real-world situations like engineering? Learners will have a chance to explore Newton's laws using some hands-on activities.

27th June - Hardware and Software

Having gained an insight into programming in the first workshop of this 4-week block, learners will explore the interactions between software and hardware, investigating how we can use digital data to control physical things in the world around us. Working with member company STL, learners will have the opportunity to further develop their programming skills using an online platform in combination with 'BBC micro:bits' and breadboards, seeing the changes to their code play out in front of their eyes.

* for young people who have joined us before - over 50% of these workshops are new content.
